Words that Enlighten

"We can't just continue living as if there is no tomorrow, because there is a tomorrow. That is all we are saying."

Environmental activist, 16 year-old, Greta Thunberg

"If you can only be tall because somebody is on their knees, then you have a serious problem."

Toni Morrison, quoted in Mother Jones.com

"History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again."

Poet and memoirist Maya Angelou, quoted in Reader's Digest

"We need something to counter the hate speech, the divisiveness, and it's possible with poetry."

Joy Harjo, the first Native American U.S. poet laureate on her new book, An American Sunrise, and the state of poetry, quoted in September 2-9 edition of Time Magazine

"We believe that to err is human. To blame it on someone else is politics."

Former Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, quoted in the Tama, Iowa, News-Herald

"Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..."

...fortunately, Jack Frost is not nipping at our noses. At least, I hope, not where we live. But you may feel a little tingle in your arms and feet when you hear the call to the dance floor. OH YEAH, IT'S HAPPENING! All of those pulsating gyrations along with those sensually swaying hands. It's unmistakable. Salsa and merengue are being played by one of Port St. Lucie's more talented groups, "La Orquesta Herencia Latina". So, join the 'PSL Hispanic American Club, Inc.' this night on December 14th when revelers will enjoy a bash they'll never forget.

This event has come and gone

...so here is a glimpse of how it turned out. Throughout the video we've included all of the flyers created by Char-Mar-Q, LLC for 'La Herencia Latina', in the past year. If you like what you see, drop us a line and express your appreciation.

Thank you.

What better way to spend an evening than to enjoy a delicious meal at a splendid restaurant. The occasion for this date slips my mind at the moment, however. Could it have something to do with all of those unopened Facebook messages I received earlier, I wonder? Well anyway, listening to the vibrant sounds emanating from that band woke something up deep down in my soul. My hands started tapping the table as my feet below began moving in sync with that all too familiar beat. And I wasn't alone, my better half was feeling it too. Before we realized it we were on the dance room floor moving to that rhythm we knew so well.

WEPA!! I heard a female's voice shout out. I too was caught up in the moment and yelled out this word we puertorriqueños use so often to express joy and happiness. Joy? Happiness? Wait a minute! That's right! It's MY BIRTHDAY, TODAY! WOW! I've reached that milestone in my life where I didn't want to think of my age anymore. My 71 year-old bones were telling me. Nooooo!!! Can't be!!! But wait, I can still dance! That's right! Me and my baby are still shakin' it up pretty well on that dance room floor. So, what can I tell you. ENJOY YOUR LIFE, WHILE YOU GOT IT. Life is just too short to let something like weary bones get in the way of your happiness. And so my wife and I continued dancing, laughing and yes, eating my birthday cake too.

PSLHAC Tropical Dance 2019

It was a whole new venue tonight, the Knights of Columbus that is. The cuisine sated our appetites preparing us for the night's festivities. The spacious hall was well lit, that is, until the dancing started. With our blood in a stir, our legs and feet itching to let loose we couldn't hold back any longer. The lights dimmed as we made our way onto the dance floor. We glided across that hardwood with our arms swaying and our heads bobbing to the rhythmical sounds emanating from DJ Freddie's' sound machine. The Latin beat played tonight could never have sounded better. By the end of the night no one could admit they hadn't enjoyed themselves. That's just the way things turned out. So tell me, when is the next dance? WEPA!!!

WOW! What can I possibly say other than WOW! We were all entertained by DJ Freddy who was definitely ready to pump out those tunes that make you move to those rhythms we all love so well. But you don't have to believe me. See for yourself.

PSLHAC honored it's club mothers

05/10/2019

The smiles on their faces said it all! It was a luncheon in honor of all of our radiantly beautiful Mamis. Stella Paez was treated to a cheery rendition of 'Happy Birthday'. It was my pleasure to attend such a wonderful and lovely gathering of sophisticated Latinos. It made me proud to be a part of it all!

Everyone in attendance had a wonderful time. If you viewed the video, that song was dedicated to our very own Joe Castro, and man, can he dance. It also helps when you have such a fine dance partner as Lizette.

We danced, we ate great Mexican delicacies off of a food-truck, no less. It was well worth the short trip from our house despite the forecast of rain. It actually didn't arrive until after the festival was over. Boy! Are we blessed or what?

Here we are displaying photos with a short commentary on the families who have made a difference within our community. If you know of anyone, including yourself, no matter how small the contribution, let us know by dropping us a line. After all, your accomplishments can serve as an example for our youth who may aspire to follow in your foot steps.

Mi Abuela and Why I Walk

by Camille Quiles de Abernathy

Margarita Jusino, that's the name of the woman who raised me. Always a family of devotion, my grandmother took care of me while both of my parents worked all hours of the day. As a young girl she taught me about the importance of always being myself while distinguishing between right and wrong.. As a woman, there is not a day I do not think about her and everything she did for me. My parents are the reason I'm standing here today and my grandmother is the reason I'm standing here as the woman I've become. I don't doubt she would be proud of me.

She loved to tell me stories of the island she left behind to come to America. Coming from a family of eighteen children where she had the distinction of being the eldest daughter. By adulthood, her siblings diapers were still there to be changed and the childish fights to be arbitrated. Even after leaving her childhood home, it wasn't too long before she had children of her own. Moving to the Bronx, NY in the 50s and having to learn a new language didn't make things any easier. Nevertheless, she persevered.

Bad news is often viewed as an event and good news has the virtue of being a process. Being a medical professional, it was easier to notice the first signs of her dementia. However, my degree didn't stop the feeling I had of powerlessness in not being able to stop my grandmother's slow decline. Yet, the things we fear can take a long time just as well. Years passed as the person I knew, the person I loved slipped away until she reached a point where the arrival of death seemed a release from the pain she suffered. Four years of my grandmother becoming someone she couldn't recognize passed. But she will forever be part of my loving memory.

I would like to say I walk because of her, but that's not entirely true. I walk because she raised me. She had so much strength, so much courage, and she did everything she could to pass it on to me. And, because of the dementia, she was taken before she could do even more. I don't walk because of my grandmother, she lives on in my heart and memories. I walk because there are still children out there whose parents work all the time to make ends meet. Children who are raised by their grandparents and taught the virtues of life. I walk because there is a little girl somewhere who loves her grandmother as much as I love mine.

Familia Quiles, Your Hosts

by Charlie Quiles

Hi, I'm Charlie Quiles, that's pronounced 'keyless' for those of you unfamiliar with the Latino pronunciation of names. As you can already tell I am very proud of my family name. My wife, Maria, although happy to share my name proudly acknowledges her maiden name of 'Martinez-Jusino'. As you can see, we are both extremely excited by our cultural heritage. As retired puertorriqueños we pride ourselves in our ability at dancing salsa and merengue. We are presently members of two Latin-American Clubs in Port St. Lucie, Florida and enjoy attending one and sometimes two dances a month. In the pages that follow we attempt to show you some of the flyers related to these dance events in hopes that you may join us.
